Printing of photos for personal use

If you want a copy of one of my photos to stick on your fridge or use in a school project or cover a crack in your wall, then please feel free to print anything you like from my site. You will get the best quality if you keep in mind, the images on my website are deliberately low resolution, so a 4"x6" or possibly 5"x7" print will be the best resolution you will likely achieve on paper using most consumer-grade colour printers or photo service.

If you would like a good-quality 8"x10" print from my original image material (digital or film), then you need only make a donation to charity and I will mail you one as a thank you.  (Have the charity send me an acknowledgement and you should email me as well.) Or send me $10 or more (US$ or CDN$), and I will send you the print (and pass on the donation to my favorite charities).  Your choice.

If you would like to use a higher resolution version of any photo on my websites as a screen background, just make a donation as described above, and I will email you the image (or leave it for you to pick up off my website).  When you email your request to me for a hi-res image, be sure to specify the dimensions of the image you desire (in pixels), as well as the filename.

Non-commercial Web use of photos

If you have a personal home page or non-commercial Web service, please feel free to use my photographs with hyperlinked credit. Acceptable HTML is

That way people know who took the picture and also can find my on-line copyright statement. You do not need to pay for usage. Just build the best Web site you can and give it back to the community. If you tell me about it (through email), so much the better!

Commercial Web use of photos

If you would like to use my pictures on a commercial page, then please do the following:

  1. Register the URL with me (sending email is fine), and
  2. Add the hyperlinked credit as above.

You do not need to pay for usage, either, although I reserve the right to deny usage on sites that I don't like (for whatever reason, at my discretion).

If you need a higher resolution version of any image appearing on my websites for your commercial page, just make a donation as described below, and I will email you the image (or leave it for you to pick up off my ftp site).  When you email your request to me for a hi-res image, be sure to specify the dimensions of the image you desire (in pixels), as well as the filename.

If you would like to distinguish yourself from the get-rich-quick artists looking to make a fast buck off the Internet without contributing anything back to the community and you feel that my photography enhances your site, then please make a charitable donation to either Operation Eyesight Universal in Calgary, Alberta, Canada or USC Canada, in Ottawa ON  Canada.  I would suggest a minimum $30 donation is appropriate.

Note: All pictures of people appearing on my pages are not model-released. Advertising usage of photos (e.g., brochures, catalogs, print ads) is very different from editorial usage of photos (e.g., newspaper and magazine articles, books, some commercial and blog websites). You cannot use pictures in advertising (e.g., an on-line product brochure or anything else that is selling a product or service) without getting a model release from any person whose image is recognizable in a photo. You might also have problems if an image contains a recognizable physical property, e.g., Disneyland. One of the reasons advertisers pay $1,000+ for images from stock agencies is that those agencies have generally already obtained the relevant releases, and are legally entitled to sell rights to use a photo.

Bounty

If you see one of my pictures in a magazine or a Web page and there is no credit, then it is almost certainly unauthorized. If you are the first person to tell me about it, I'll send you a free print or high resolution version of your choice of any of my images.

Text and Stories

Please feel free to redistribute via hardcopy or email for non-commercial purposes any of my writings, but please don't break up my documents (except by chapter or page). Please attribute the source in such a way that someone can find the most up-to-date version on my websites.

Please do not ever copy any of my (text) content to a public Web server. Link to my pages instead. The problem with you putting a page of mine on your server is that the search engines will find it and send my readers to your server instead. Thus they will be deprived of my latest content...and I do update my websites on a regular basis.

Use of photos and Web pages in print

If you are publishing an article, story or book to print, CD-ROM or other hard media through a free publication of a non-commercial organization, feel free to use whatever you want with credit as above under the following conditions:

  1. Screen captures must be made from a computer with a 24-bit color video board. (Machines with 8-bit cards produce distorted images and colors.)
  2. The URL must be legible in the capture or separately printed in a caption
  3. A small credit must be printed reading "Web page courtesy of JoeTourist InfoSystems - www.JoeTourist.net" or "Photo courtesy of JoeTourist InfoSystems - www.JoeTourist.net)"
  4. Contact me informing me of your proposed use and/or send me a complimentary copy of the finished item.

If you simply want to use my photographs to illustrate an article, story or book which you are being paid for, e.g., you just want a tropical fish photo to go with a story on barrier reefs, then that is commercial usage.  You are not covered by any of these blanket licenses, and you should send me email with a proposal.
