There are three main methods of astrophography:

bullet

Wide field - using film-based or digital cameras and their lenses - no telescope, except possibly to guide the camera.

bullet

A-focal - taken through an eyepiece of the telescope.

bullet

Prime Focus - taken with a camera attached to the back focal plane of a telescope.  I am just starting to explore this option using both the Canon 300D dSLR and the Meade LPI Imager (webcam).
